Face to Face

The idea for these paintings on glass evolved during the COVID lockdowns where interactions with the outside world was mediated by screens – phone, computer, even the window of my mother’s aged care facility. Explorations of the world was limited to virtual encounters and my attention was drawn to a mirrored image of myself on the face of my digital screen that became part of the image. This idea of self-reflection mirroring the physical inspired experimentation with glass.

For me it was a natural progression from computer painting and the process of reverse painting offered a great sense of freedom and excitement of exploring a new media. My exhibition Face to Face is the outcome of my explorations of abstract compositions, pattern, colour, mark making and spatial elements.

I love the way the glass reflects the surroundings and the viewer. External elements that face the painting catch the light that projects on to the glass becoming part of the surface of the work; adding another dimension to the painting.
